Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and we hope you had an enjoyable Christmas break! We are very much looking forward to the term ahead and the learning journey we will undertake together.  Our topic for the first half term is ‘Burps, Bottoms and Bile’ which will be a voyage of discovery to investigate the busy world inside our bodies. We will be creating a working model of the digestive system and will use it to persuade others to eat healthily. We will communicate through our writing and artwork how to look after this marvelous belching, squelching, mixture-making machine we call our body. We will be inviting you to come and see our marvelous creations later in the half term.

A new topic web will be in home learning books on Thursday.

Reading and Library books

As reading is such an important skill across the whole curriculum, I should be very grateful if you could ensure that your child reads for at least 10 minutes per day at home. Please continue to record this in their reading records.

We are continuing our ‘Strive for 5’ reading challenge and children can earn awards for the number of times they read at home across the half term. If they read on five occasions during  the week they will be entered into our weekly raffle to try and win a book. To support reading at home, we have a subscription to Bug Club which is an online reading programme where children can access e-books to read. Your child’s log-in details can be found in their Reading Record. We will visit the school library on a Thursday so children can borrow books to take home. Also, there is a well-stocked library at the American base in Gricignano which British families can use.

Physical Education (PE) lessons

PE will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. We would appreciate it if PE kits could be brought into school at the beginning of the week and left on your child’s peg until the end of the week. Please ensure that your child’s clothing items are named to avoid items going missing. If your child has their ears pierced and they cannot remove the earrings themselves, please ensure they are removed before coming into school Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Weekly Home Learning and Times Table Rockstars

Each Thursday your child will receive their home learning tasks for the week. These are to be completed and handed in the following Tuesday for marking. More information can be found your child’s Home Learning Book.

All children have access to Times Table Rockstars. This is an online child friendly site that encourages children to recall times tables with fluency. Children are inspired to become ‘rockstars’ through fun yet structured practice. I would be grateful if you could encourage your child to access this for a few minutes each day.

Finally, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me should you wish to discuss anything. You can make an appointment to meet before 8.15am or after 3.10pm or alternatively you can email the school office and ask for the email to be forwarded.

Many thanks for your support.
