Lamborghini Class-Summer Term 2, 2023

Welcome to the home page for the second half of the Summer Term 2023.

We have a new topic this half term called ‘Gallery Rebels’. It is an art topic exploring some of the key artists and art movements in the last 200 years.

The topic web detailing all of our learning for the half term can be downloaded below.

Week ending – Friday 16th June 2023

We have continued our rehearsals for ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ this week but we have moved from just reading through the script, to standing on stage so we can start to get a feel for how our characters are interacting with each other. We learnt another new song; it’s great so see how quickly are learning them and remembering the different words.

In English this week we started to look specifically at discussion texts and the ability to create a balanced argument. We studied an argument text in order to understand how they are structured and then had a go at using conjunctions to add cohesion across a paragraph when making an argument and adding elaborating facts. We then decided on a topic that we would like to write a balanced argument about. Everyone opted to choose their own subject matter – we had an impressive range in class. The children chose really interesting arguments such as, Should artefacts be returned to Benin? to Should children be able to play football in school everyday?

In maths, we continued our maths units with year 5 exploring 12-hour clock and calculating time durations. Year 6 moved onto solving 1 and 2-step equations.

We had a great PE lesson on Tuesday as we started playing cricket. We started off by playing continuous cricket so we could practise our fielding and batting skills. It was amazing to have our first catch! Well done Alex.

Week ending – Friday 9th June 2023

Welcome back to the final half term of the academic year! It was lovely to see everyone again after our break and hear about some of the exciting things you’ve been up to over the break.

Aside from our normal lessons, it was a very exciting week because we started rehearsing for our summer production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. We read through the play so everyone could start to get a feel for their part. We were very impressed to note that some of the children had clearly been learning their lines over half-term. We also started to learn some of the songs; the tunes are very catchy and we couldn’t stop singing little bits outside of our practises.

We started a new book this week which will be the focus of our English lessons for the remainder of the term. It’s called ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ written by Michael Morpurgo and tells the story of a boy and his family who embark on a sailing adventure around the world because of circumstances which happen that were beyond their control. We enjoyed really the first chapter and discussing the characters introduced so far.

Year 5 started a new block in maths on being able to tell the time. We have started by recapping the terminology around telling the time to the nearest 5 and 10 minutes, quarter past/to and half past/to. Any practise the children can have at home would be much appreciated.

Year 6 are continuing their unit on algebra. This week the children looked at creating formulae from sequences and writing form equations.

A great first week back.
